Beautiful gardens, grounded in their setting
Every garden begins with careful observation. The architecture of the property, existing trees and planting, views, light, levels, soil and surrounding landscape all help determine what the garden should become.
Rather than applying a fixed style, each design is developed in response to the site and the people who will use it. The aim is to create a garden that feels individual, balanced and naturally connected to its setting.
Composition and structure
Andy approaches a garden much as he approaches a photographic composition. Strong gardens depend on proportion, rhythm, balance and a clear sense of movement.
Views are framed deliberately, paths and sightlines guide the eye, and open spaces are balanced with enclosure. Planting, structures and changes in material create focal points and moments of interest, while a strong underlying layout gives the garden clarity and cohesion.
Designed around real life
A successful garden must do more than look attractive. It should support the way its owners actually live.
The design process considers how people move through the garden, where they sit, entertain, cook, play, garden or find privacy. Practical requirements such as storage, access, maintenance and changing family needs are integrated into the design from the outset.
Each project is developed collaboratively. The client’s ideas and priorities provide the starting point, while Andy’s role is to interpret them, resolve competing requirements and bring everything together as a coherent whole.
Resilience without compromise
Gardens are increasingly required to cope with wetter winters, prolonged dry periods and greater temperature extremes. These conditions influence the design from the beginning rather than being treated as problems to solve later.
This may include improving drainage and water retention, selecting plants suited to the site, reducing unnecessary hard surfaces, planning irrigation carefully and choosing durable materials.
Resilience does not mean limiting a garden to native planting or accepting a less refined result. It means making informed decisions so that a beautiful garden can establish successfully, mature gracefully and remain practical to maintain as conditions change.
From concept to completion
Andy combines creative training with substantial practical construction experience. This allows designs to be developed with a clear understanding of how they will be built.
Materials, access, levels, drainage, sequencing and long-term maintenance are considered throughout the process. Where Hook Garden Design is involved in the build, this continuity helps protect the original design intent while allowing practical decisions to be made intelligently on site.
The result is a garden that feels composed but not contrived: visually distinctive, useful in everyday life and increasingly rewarding as it develops over time.
